STEP 1:
COMPLETE YOUR PROFICIENCY / TRAININGIf you want to own a firearm, you must undergo training at an accredited institution and obtain a
training proficiency certificate.
If you wish to do the training through our facilities, you may simply click on our
Proficiency Training tab to place your order.
Please note:
All training is conducted at our Johannesburg facilities.You will be required to complete the
open-book exam at home, including all questionnaires and information pages.
Once completed, you must contact our training providers to make a booking to finalise your training. This includes:
- A classroom lesson
- Dry-fire training
- A closed-book exam
- A practical shooting assessment
What to bring on the day of your lesson:- Two (2) certified copies of your ID (NO driver’s licences accepted)
- One black pen
Once all requirements are completed, your
training certificate and
statement of results will be issued.
STEP 2:
APPLY FOR YOUR COMPETENCY CERTIFICATE(At Your Local Police Station)After receiving your training certificate, you must apply for your
Competency Certificate at your local police station.
First, download the application forms (
SAPS 517) from:
www.saps.gov.zaYou will need to submit the following documents with your application:
- Two (2) certified copies of your ID
- Two (2) certified copies of your training certificate with statement of results
- Proof of address (e.g. water, lights, or Telkom bill)
- Proof of employment or a detailed description of your occupation
- Three (3) character reference letters from family or friends, including copies of their IDs
- (We recommend three letters)
- One (1) set of ID-size colour photographs (2 photos per application)
Important notes:- You are responsible for submitting your application
- Fingerprints and interviews will be conducted at your local police station
- R70.00 cash must be paid when submitting your competency application
STEP 3:
APPLY FOR YOUR FIREARM LICENCE(At Your Local Police Station)Once your
Competency Certificate has been issued, you may apply for your
firearm licence.
You must
purchase a firearm before applying. The dealership will provide the application forms (
SAPS 271) and must also supply a
SAPS 350(a) form.
Before submitting your application, compile the following documents:
- Two (2) certified copies of your ID
- Two (2) certified copies of your training certificate with statement of results
- One (1) copy of your Competency Certificate
- Proof of address (e.g. water, lights, or Telkom bill)
- Proof of employment or a detailed description of your occupation
- A full written motivation explaining why you wish to own a firearm
- Three (3) character reference letters from family or friends, with copies of their IDs
- (Police stations may request only two, but we recommend three)
Additional requirements:Section 15 Licence (Occasional Hunting/Sport):- Letter from a farmer or
- Sports club confirmation letter
- Firearm endorsement letter
- Shot target (recommended)
Section 16 Licence (Dedicated Sport Shooting):- Club confirmation letter
- Club membership card
- Club certificate
- Endorsement letter
- Shot target
Also required:- One (1) set of ID-size colour photographs (2 per application)
- Invoice for the firearm purchased
- Two (2) photographs of your safe (inside and outside), clearly showing it is secured to a fixed wall or floor
- Police Clearance Certificate (if you have had any charges)
Important notes:- All statements made in your application must be supported by proof
- You are responsible for submitting your application
- Fingerprints and interviews will take place at your local police station
- R140.00 cash must be paid when submitting your licence application
